PA and EQUIPMENT

Where venues have their own PA systems, this page sets out the PA and other equipment which Bob will need for one of his concerts.

  • PA system with speakers suitable for singing output, with:
    • Hand held roving microphone (preferably radio mic). Bob’s music has a wide vocal dynamic range and he needs a close-up mic. Clip on lapel/tie mics are not usually suitable.
    • DI box or cable from PA system to reach performance area with 3.5mm (mini-jack) plug for backing tracks**.
    • Fold-back arrangement. It is essential that Bob can hear the backing tracks from where he performs. This probably will require a separate fold-back speaker (with its own separate volume adjustment) either immediately in front of or behind him.
  • Piano (and stool) – either accoustic or electric, in the area where Bob is to perform. Depending on the size of the hall the piano may also need to be amplified thro the PA system.
  • Microphone stand – although Bob holds the roving mic for most of the performance he will need a stand when singing from the piano
  • Sturdy music stand
  • Someone to operate the PA, and ensure that the backing tracks and the solo singing are balanced. The concerts work best if the overall output sound is comfortably loud. Not ear crashing, but as loud as reasonably possible.
  • A bar stool to sing a couple of songs from would be good but not essential.
  • A small table to stand a drink on.
** Backing tracks are either CDs or Bob's own arrangements all of which have an MCPS licence.

Lighting is not essential although if there is some way of lighting the stage area and keeping the hall dark it always helps the atmosphere.
